Information on:

Step 1 Emergencies:

If the situation is an emergency and you believe that the person for whom you are concerned is at risk, call 9-1-1.


Step 2 Determine the nature of the call:

Advise all callers that it is useful to keep a journal (not accessible by the abuser) of dates, times and details of abuse. Details will be helpful in case of legal proceedings.

Determine if the caller is a senior in a retirement or long-term care facility, a senior in the community or someone calling on behalf of an abused senior.

  • If caller is a senior in a retirement or long-term care facility, or calling about a senior in one of these facilities, go to Step 3.
  • If caller is a senior in the community, go to Step 4.
  • If caller is someone calling on behalf of an abused senior living in the community, go to Step 5.
  • If caller wants general information about abuse or a presentation about abuse, go to Step 6
  • If not sure which step to follow, or caller has been referred for help in the past through one of these steps and is calling again because they did not receive help when they followed the step, refer caller to:

Step 3 Reporting Abuse within a FACILITY:

Reporting abuse is mandatory. If a resident of a retirement home or long-term care home is NOT in immediate danger, direct caller to contact the manager of the retirement home or long-term care home to report the abuse.

Also direct caller to report abuse based on the resident's location:

  • Long-Term Care Family Support and Action Line 1-866-434-014


Step 4 Suspected Elder Abuse in the COMMUNITY:

If caller is NOT in immediate danger, ask if caller can access a social worker through their primary care provider.

If NO primary care provider, refer to Ontario Health atHome intake to request a social worker 519-371-2112.


Step 5 For someone calling on behalf of someone being abused in the community:

If caller states there is no immediate danger, ask if the senior has dementia or cognitive problems with unknown diagnosis:


Step 6 For someone calling for general information or a presentation:

  • Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee - If you believe someone is no longer mentally capable of understanding their situation, and you believe that they are being harmed because they do not have enough to eat, or because their money is disappearing, you may want to call the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee. The Guardianship Investigations branch of that Office has legal authority to investigate and intervene in these kinds of situations. They may be contacted at 416-327-6348 or 1-844-640-3615.
