When Environment Canada issues an extreme heat or cold alert, rest areas are available to residents for relief from extreme weather conditions. These can include public buildings such as libraries or community centres during regular business hours. Other buildings such as malls or cinemas that have air conditioning/heating could also be used.

In South Bruce Peninsula, the following libraries may be accessed in extreme weather conditions.

  • Sauble Beach Library - 27 Community Centre Dr, Sauble Beach - Mon-Wed, Fri 10 am-6 pm * Sat 11 am-4 pm, Sun 12 noon-4 pm (Summer hours vary - please visit library.brucecounty.on.ca/locations for details)
  • Wiarton Library - 578 Brown St, Wiarton, Ontario - 519-534-2602 - Tue 10 am-7 pm; Wed 10 am-6 pm; Thu 10 am-7 pm; Fri 10 am-6 pm; Sat 10 am-4 pm; Sun 1 pm-5 pm.

Under extreme circumstances, South Bruce Peninsula will open the Sauble Beach Community Centre (30 Community Centre Dr, Sauble Beach) and the Wiarton and District Community Centre and Arena (526 Taylor St, Wiarton) during extreme heat or cold alerts. Notification of opening can be found on the municipal website, www.southbrucepeninsula.com or social media.
