Description (Service) For individuals unable to complete their income tax and benefit return themselves and are unable to pay for assistance, the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) may be able to assist. Volunteers can help complete the income tax and benefit return if income is low and tax situation is simple.

Can prepare current and previous years' returns.

Eligibility These suggested maximum income levels should serve as a guideline only
Single individual - up to $35,000
Two-person family - up to $45,000 (combined income of a couple, or one adult with one child under 18)
+ add $2,500 for each additional dependent child in the family
Interest income limited to under $1,000
Local community organizations have the flexibility to adjust or set additional eligibility criteria for taxpayers based on the local economic environment, the population they serve, and their own capacity
Volunteers do not prepare tax returns for complex situations such as:
  • returns for deceased persons
  • individuals who file for bankruptcy
  • self-employed individuals
  • individuals who report capital gains or losses
  • individuals with foreign property or income
  • individuals who report employment expenses, or business or rental income and expenses
Eligible taxpayers normally served by the CVITP include:
  • Indigenous peoples
  • modest-income individuals
  • newcomers to Canada
  • adults 65 years and older
  • housing-insecure individuals
  • persons with disabilities
  • students and youth
Application The clinics will be appointment-based in 2025 and will be in person. No drop off of documents will be accepted, unless previously arranged.
Call Alex Ruff, MP's office and leave a message. Volunteer will call back to screen for eligibility and set up appointment and location. Existing clients should call the Owen Sound CVITP directly to speak to volunteers.
Cancellations: Three business days notice prior to appointment date is required to cancel an appointment. No shows will lose the privilege of using the clinic
